Minot 55th Street closing to finish Northeast Bridge Project

A portion of 55th Street, just north of U.S. Highway 2 in east Minot, will be closed to through traffic starting on May 28 as construction crews will be finishing one of the area’s largest road projects, the 55th Street Northeast Bridge.

“Due to last weekend’s rain we decided to delay closing 55th Street until conditions dried out,” said Jeff McElwain, project engineer with Ackerman-Estvold. “Construction crews expect to start in earnest after Memorial Day on the last touches needed to finish work on the bridge and tie in all adjoining access roads.”

The road closure for through traffic is expected to be in place until the middle of July. Traffic is encouraged to follow detour signs directing drivers to use 27th Street. As a reminder, the driving public is encouraged to exercise extra caution throughout the construction zone to ensure their safety and the safety of the crews.

The completion of the Northeast Bypass last fall and the expected summer time completion of the 55th Street Bridge will provide much needed relief to traffic concerns on the east side of town, as well as allow for additional growth to continue taking place in our region. In 2013, construction crews expect to finish detail work on the bridge, pave access roads to the east and west of the bridge, finish the retaining wall and complete the north and south portions of the new 55th Street to connect into existing roadways.

Minot 55th Street Northeast Bridge Project resuming soon

Contractors and construction crews, along with Minot, Ward County and state officials, are planning a mid-May construction start to finish one of the area’s largest road projects, the 55th Street Northeast Bridge.

“With spring weather finally here, we are getting a start in the next week on the last few months of work with the bridge portion of this project,” said Jeff McElwain, project engineer with Ackerman-Estvold. “With the completion of the Northeast Bypass last fall and the expected summer time completion of the 55th Street Bridge this will provide some much needed relief to traffic concerns on the northeast side of town, as well as allow for additional growth to continue taking place in our region.”

Due to finishing work on the bridge and adjoining roads, 55th Street will be closed to through traffic starting the week of May 20th. This road closure is expected to be in place until July. Traffic is encouraged to take appropriate detours as signage around the project directs by using 27th Street. As a reminder, the driving public is encouraged to exercise extra caution throughout the construction zone to ensure their safety and the safety of the crews.

The 55th Street Northeast Grade Separation over Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad will provide a bridge structure to carry traffic over the BNSF mainline track, existing yard tracks and additional proposed yard tracks. In 2013, construction crews expect to finish detail work on the bridge, pave access roads to the east and west of the bridge, finish the retaining wall and complete the north and south portions of the new 55th Street to connect into existing roadways.

Ames Construction, out of Burnsville, MN, is the project’s prime contractor and Ackerman-Estvold Engineering is the project engineer for the bridge and bypass project that is changing the landscape of northeast Minot.

Temporary lane closure on U.S. Highway 2 at 55th Street to modify traffic signals

West-bound drivers on U.S. Highway 2 should expect a temporary lane closure at the 55th Street East intersection on Wednesday, December 19th, as crews will be modifying the intersection signal standard to allow for more vertical clearance.

The work in this intersection will be on the north bound and west bound intersection signals. During this time, west bound traffic on U.S. 2 will be reduced to one lane with no right turns from U.S. 2 on to 55th Street allowed.

All of the intersection signals at U.S. 2 and 55th Street East will be out of service while the work is being done. The work is expected to be completed within one day. Temporary signs and flaggers will be present while the work is being done and the driving public is encouraged to exercise caution throughout the construction zone to ensure their safety and the safety of the crews. Speeds will be reduced to 35 mph through the work zone.

Dignitaries officially open new NE Bypass around Minot

Federal, state and local officials dedicated the new Northeast Bypass road around Minot today, cutting the ribbon on site despite windy conditions. North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple, U.S. Senator John Hoeven and North Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT) Director Francis Ziegler joined Ward County Commission Chairman John Fjeldahl, Minot Mayor Curt Zimbelman and project representatives in officially opening the new road that provides a key bypass around the northeast side of the growing community of Minot.

“This project is a great example of federal, state, local and industry collaboration, with multiple partners working together to enhance the region's infrastructure and quality of life," said Gov. Dalrymple. "The new bypass will not only reduce the number of trucks traveling through Minot, but will help drive the city and county's continued growth and development."

Construction on the NE Bypass started at the end of August 2011 and opened to motorists at the end of September 2012. The 7-mile bypass road was made as a result of upgrades to County Road 10A (46th Avenue N.E.), and 55th Street N.E and mirrors the northwest U.S. Highway 83 bypass. More than 31,000 tons of asphalt pavement was used to form the bypass.

“This $26.4 million Minot bypass/bridge project would not be happening without the $20 million in federal funding we secured to make it happen,” said Sen. Hoeven. “It’s exciting to see this portion, the bypass, open and we look forward to completion of the bridge project to not only facilitate traffic, but also help the port of Minot with intermodal shipping.”

The new bypass was built at a cost of $9.9 million, including construction, project engineering, right of way acquisitions and utility relocations. The bypass represents half of the overall 55th Street NE Bypass/Bridge project. Funding for the project is a collection of Federal Highway, state, Ward County and Minot funds as the road represents a true collaboration to alleviate traffic going through Minot and improve traffic flow in east Minot and Ward County.

“This project fulfills a long-term dream of the Minot community, Ward County and many residents throughout the state,” said Ziegler. “The project is good for the state and local economy, but it is also an important project as it helps to safely move people and goods.”

Gladen Construction from Laporte, Minn. was the prime contractor responsible for this portion of the 55th Street NE Bypass/Bridge project. Ackerman-Estvold Engineering and Management Consulting, of Minot, is the project engineer responsible for the road and bridge project. Work continues on the bridge portion of the complete 55th Street project, as crews poured a third deck of concrete during the first week of October. This portion of the project is scheduled to be complete in 2013.

NE Bypass open to traffic traveling around Minot

The new Northeast Bypass around Minot is now open to all motorists, as this afternoon the intersection at 27th Street NE and 46th Avenue NE was resigned to reflect the big change for traffic.

“With new stop signs in place for northbound and southbound traffic at this intersection we would urge drivers to please pay close attention to this change,” said Jeff McElwain, project engineer for the 55th Street NE Bypass/Bridge. “With the bypass now open to traffic this becomes the dominant arterial road in northeast Minot, much like the U.S. Highway 83 bypass on the northwest side of town.”

An official ribbon cutting for the seven-mile stretch of road is scheduled to take place Wednesday, October 3. With funding for the project coming from federal, state, county and city funds the project represents a true collaboration to accomplish a road designed to alleviate traffic going through Minot.

The northeast bypass was made as a result of upgrades to County Road 10A, 46th Avenue N.E., and 55th Street N.E. Gladen Construction from Laporte, Minn. was the prime contractor responsible for this portion of the 55th Street NE Bypass/Bridge project.

Work continues on the bridge portion of the complete project, as crews poured a second deck of concrete this week and plan to finish the last deck pour on the bridge in early October, weather permitting. This portion of the full project is scheduled to be complete in 2013.

Soon-to-be-open NE Bypass to impact traffic patterns in Minot

With final improvements on the 55th Street NE Bypass going in place this month, drivers that normally use northeast Minot roads should be aware of upcoming changes to traffic patterns. A key intersection that will be changed next week is at County Road 19 (27th Street NE) and County Road 10A (46th Avenue). Drivers traveling north or south on County Road 19 will have to stop for traffic along the new bypass.

“We will post stop signs at this intersection the middle of next week and would urge drivers to please pay close attention to this change,” said Jeff McElwain, project engineer for the 55th Street NE Bypass/Bridge. “With the change to the flow of traffic, the new bypass becomes the dominant arterial road in northeast Minot, much like the U.S. Highway 83 bypass on the northwest side of town.”

Over the last couple of weeks crews from Gladen Construction, the prime contractor in charge of the bypass portion of the project, finished paving new road shoulders along County Road 10A (46th Avenue NE) and poured the last lifts of asphalt to finish the new road along CR 10A and 55th Street NE. New striping along the road, street signs and seeding along the project are the final touches.

Concrete to be poured for new surface of Bridge at 55th Street

The first of three major deck pours to form the driving surface of a new 1,100-foot-long bridge in northeast Minot will take place tomorrow.

Crews from Ames Construction will use Tuesday, September 11 to pour and form concrete that will provide the top of the 55th Street NE Bypass/Grade Separation Bridge. This step marks a milestone for the work being done in 2012.

“Huge strides have been made this year in building this bridge from the ground up,” said Jeff McElwain, project engineer for the 55th Street NE Bypass/Grade Separation project. “We anticipate being able to do about six more weeks of work out here on the bridge before we close up this portion for the season. Then we will be back at in 2013 to finish off the bridge and connected roads.”

The fresh concrete being poured on Tuesday will take two weeks to cure, or harden, before the forms can be removed. After this is done and weather permitting, crews will be able to make a second deck pour around the 25th of September.

Even with the increased work on the bridge portion, the road alongside the bridge remains open to both lanes of traffic on 55th Street. As a reminder, the driving public is encouraged to exercise extra caution throughout the construction zone to ensure their safety and the safety of the crews.

Temporary closure planned for 55th Street on Saturday, August 18th

A section of 55th Street will be closed to traffic early Saturday morning and is expected to reopen that afternoon. The roadway that will be under construction is just north of the railroad tracks and south of County Road 12, near Minot Milling.

Crews from Ames Construction, the prime contractor for the bridge work on 55th Street, are installing an 18” pipe through the roadway that will assist in drainage after the new bridge is constructed.

During the closure motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes. As a reminder, the driving public is encouraged to exercise extra caution throughout the construction zone to ensure their safety and the safety of the crews.

Road paving along Northeast Bypass to slow down traffic

Construction crews with the 55th Street NE Bypass Project are paving or shaping two separate stretches of the soon-to-be bypass over the upcoming weeks, as drivers are being asked to pay close attention to reduced speeds.

Starting this week, crews from Bechtold Paving in Minot will start paving along a two-and-a-half mile stretch of 55th Street, from County Road 12 (4th Avenue NE) north to the new curve in the northeast corner of the bypass. Crews plan on laying down two separate two-and-a-half inch thick lifts of asphalt to form the paved road. This stretch of road will be laid down in two, fourteen-foot lanes. This northern portion of the 55th Street NE Bypass Project will remain closed to through traffic during the paving.

For the next couple of weeks crews from Gladen Construction, the prime contractor in charge of the bypass portion of the project, will finish widening and shaping new road shoulders along County Road 10A (46th Avenue NE). During this time flaggers will be present and traffic speeds will be reduced to 25 mph. In early August, paving is scheduled along this northern portion of the new bypass.

Drivers are asked to pay close attention to appropriate signage and drive slowly in construction zones.

Structural work underway on wall supporting part of the 55th Street Bridge

The placement of 125 separate concrete panels to form a unique wall at the 55th Street NE Bypass/Grade Separation project is underway and will wrap up this week.

Crews from Ames Construction, the prime contractor for the bridge work on 55th Street, are building the mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall on the southeast side of the bridge. When completed, the MSE wall will be 590-feet long and measure as high as 25 feet. Its purpose is to provide a stable earth-based foundation for the southern portion of the bridge, in a limited space.

“The unique design of this MSE retaining wall allows us to place the bridge closer to what will be the “old” 55th Street and not disrupt the homeowners on the east side of the bridge,” said Jeff McElwain, project engineer for the 55th Street NE Bypass/Grade Separation project.

First bridge beams placed this week at the 55th Street Project

The task of placing 70 bridge beams on the 55th Street NE Bypass/Grade Separation project kicked off this week, as construction crews started today on this milestone event.

A team of trucks will take two runs each day, for the next ten working days, to bring the precast bridge beams to the construction site. The beams were formed in Menoken, N.D. at the site of subcontractor Cretex. The biggest beams are 134-feet long and weigh approximately 112,000 pounds. Crews at Cretex worked for three months to form the properly-sized beams.

“With the placement of these beams, the work continues to progress nicely throughout the bridge portion of this project,” said Jeff McElwain, project engineer for the 55th Street NE Bypass/Grade Separation. “Seeing the spans being formed by the beams serves as a milestone event for all involved with the project and the general public.”

Seven beams will be placed every day, forming one bridge span at a time. There are ten bridge spans total in the 55th Street NE Bypass/Grade Separation project. The crews expect to finish placing the bridge beams near the start of the North Dakota State Fair at the end of the month.

Ames Construction, the prime contractor in charge of the bridge portion, finished earlier this week with pouring columns and caps to form the bridge piers that will support the 1,100-foot-long bridge. In all nine columns and two abutments are needed to provide the proper foundation for the bridge beams.

55th Street Project pushing forward during Fourth of July

As contractors with the Minot 55th Street Northeast Bypass project continue to stay on schedule, construction crews will work during the Fourth of July holiday.

A special request was recently made by Gladen Construction, the contractor in charge of the bypass portion of the project, to work through the July Fourth holiday and this request was granted. The contractor continues to prepare the future bypass along a seven-mile stretch of improved roadway.

For the bridge portion of the 55th Street Project, Ames is finishing driving pile and pouring columns for the bridge. The bridge piers are being formed in Menoken, N.D. and are scheduled to be brought up and placed on the columns over the next couple of weeks. With the work on the bridge portion, the road remains open to both lanes of traffic on 55th Street. Electrical work on a portion of the 55th Street NE Bypass Project will impact traffic passing through the intersection of U.S. Highway 83 and 46th Ave. NW in Minot tomorrow, Tuesday, May 22. Weather pending, drivers can expect the intersection signal at this location to be inoperable for most of the day starting at roughly 8 a.m. During this time flaggers will handle traffic from each direction. Northbound and southbound traffic on Highway 83 will be moved to the inside lane and the speed limit will be reduced to 40 mph to ensure safety. Crews will be moving an electrical junction box to allow for 46th Ave. to be widened on the east side of this intersection.

The Northeast Bypass will be made as a result of upgrades to County Road 10A, 46th Avenue NE, and 55th Street NE. The 55th Street NE Bypass project has reduced traffic speeds from 45 mph to 25 mph throughout the construction zone.

Work on 13th Street intersection to cause temporary closure to through traffic

Construction starting tomorrow, May 17, along the U.S. Highways 2 & 52 and 13th Street SE intersection will impact the traveling public as the following will occur starting at 7 a.m.:

- Traffic will be reduced to one lane each direction for those traveling both eastbound and westbound on U.S. Highways 2 & 52 with initial work taking place in the inside median lanes.
- Once work is completed on the inside lanes crews will move to the outside lanes.
- 13th Street SE, from 21st Avenue SE to 18th Avenue SE for both northbound and southbound traffic, will be temporarily closed.
- Access to businesses remains open, see the construction map for details.

Motorists traveling northbound and southbound on 13th Street SE should plan ahead and find alternate routes. Speeds along U.S. Highways 2 & 52 will be reduced. Flaggers will be present throughout the construction zone. As work continues, for the traveling public safety and the safety of construction workers, drivers are reminded to stay alert when traveling through the construction zone.

The prime contractor, Keller Paving, will be completing mill and overlay work and placing the final lift of asphalt through the intersection. It is expected that normal traffic routes through the area will be able to resume within a week.

Shoulder widening to slow down traffic on County Road 10A

Construction crews with the 55th Street NE Bypass are widening a two-mile stretch of road that will slow down traffic along a northern portion of the project. Gladen Construction is now working along County Road 10A (46th Avenue NE) and has reduced traffic speeds down to 25 mph as they improve and widen the road.

Flaggers are onsite and roads are down to one-lane of traffic for short lengths. Drivers are asked to pay close attention to appropriate signage and drive slowly in construction zones.

The final construction touches along the U.S. Highway 2 & 52 intersection improvement project will take place this spring. Crews start the week of April 23 on finishing turn lanes at 6th Street SE at the intersection of the 2 & 52 highways. This work will require the contractor to close down portions of the outside lane of traffic along the highway.

In addition to work on turning lanes, crews will be pouring sidewalks along 21st Ave. SE, placing permanent striping along U.S. Highways 2 & 52 as well as completing bike paths and seeding throughout the work zone.

Minot 55th Street Northeast Bypass Project underway for 2012

Contractors and construction crews, along with Minot, Ward County and state officials, are getting an early start to the 2012 construction season on one of the area’s largest projects, the 55th Street Northeast Bypass. Gladen Construction, from Laporte, MN, and Ames Construction, out of Burnsville, MN, are the project’s prime contractors and are available for weekly public meetings starting Tuesday, April 10.

Ackerman-Estvold Engineering is the project engineer for the $17.1 million endeavor that will change the landscape of northeast Minot.

“We were able to get a lot done on this project in 2011 with a mild fall and it looks like Mother Nature is going to allow us to get a relatively early start for the 2012 season,” said Jeff McElwain, project engineer with Ackerman-Estvold. “The 55th Street Bridge and the Northeast Bypass should provide some much needed relief to traffic concerns on that side of town, as well as allow for additional growth to take place should the city need to expand in that direction.”

The Northeast Bypass will be made as a result of upgrades to County Road 10A, 46th Avenue NE, and 55th Street NE. Gladen Construction is in charge of this portion of the project.

The 55th Street Northeast Grade Separation over Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad will provide a bridge structure to carry traffic over the BNSF mainline track, existing yard tracks and additional proposed yard tracks to be constructed north of the existing tracks. Ames Construction is the crew responsible for this section.

Weekly public information meetings will be held for the 55th Street project. Starting Tuesday, April 17 the meeting will be held at the Ames Construction Trailer, located at the intersection of 55th Street NE and County Road 12 (4th Avenue NE) at 11 a.m.

Due to work along these roads, there will be intermittent closures. Traffic is encouraged to take appropriate detours as signage on the project directs. Progress on the Minot 55th Street Northeast Bypass project has some roads opening up this week, while others are temporarily closed for underground work.

Improvements to where U.S. Highway 2 and 55th Street NE intersect are complete and both lanes of traffic in each direction on Highway 2 are open.

55th Street NE remains closed to through traffic from north of U.S. Highway 2 to the BNSF railroad tracks just south of County Road 12/4th Avenue NE. Crews from Ames Construction will continue underground work on water and sewer systems on this stretch of road for the next couple of days. Local access for homeowners and businesses is still available.

Construction of the Northeast Bypass is into Phase 2, as crews from Gladen Construction are making upgrades to County Road 10A, 46th Avenue NE, and 55th Street NE—all roads that will become part of the bypass. Due to this work, traffic is encouraged to use alternate routes around the project. Local homeowners will continue to have access to these roads throughout construction.

Utility companies continue to work in both areas of the project, preparing for the bridge and larger road. Due to this work, there will be intermittent closures. Traffic is encouraged to take appropriate detours as signage on the project directs.

Business access still available with 17th Street Intersection work starting this week

Construction along the U.S. Highway 2 & 52 Project requires crews to close down where 17th Street SE connects to the highway, as drivers can follow the appropriate blue signs to access businesses along 20th Avenue SE.

Phase 4 of the Intersection Improvement Project is underway and in order to properly complete turn lanes at 17th Street, Keller Paving will be restricting access on and off the highways at this spot for the next couple of weeks.

The proper signage (blue business access signs) to direct traffic to businesses along 20th Avenue SE has been placed along key points of the project.

During this closure, crews will be removing old asphalt, widening the intersection and constructing an appropriate raised barrier that will restrict traffic from taking left-hand turns or crossing traffic on U.S. Highways 2 & 52. They will also be adding in turn lanes and curb where appropriate.

Other turning lanes at intersections remain under construction as traffic on the main highway has been reduced to one-lane each direction. Speed limits are reduced to 40 MPH throughout the construction zone.

Part of the project is to convert the intersections along the highway to ¾ access, allowing full access off of U.S. Highways 2 & 52 and right-on access only from certain side streets. Access is available for northbound traffic to go west on Highways 2 & 52 at 13th Street SE or 23rd Street SE.

The initial steps in the Minot 55th Street Northeast Bypass project are in the books as construction crews prepare for early milestones. Gladen Construction, from Laporte, MN, and Ames Construction, out of Burnsville, MN, are prime contractors on the project and have been working at the site for more than a month.

The U.S. Highways 2 & 52 project reached a milestone this week, with Mother Nature allowing contractors to take advantage of warm weather. The prime contractor, Keller Paving, reports that early this week the underground portion of work within the medians of U.S. Highways 2 & 52 is complete, with road paving and concrete work to push forward at various points on the project.

Turning lanes at intersections remain under construction as traffic on the main highway has been reduced to one-lane each direction. Speed limits are reduced to 40 MPH throughout the construction zone.

Part of the project is to convert the intersections along the highway to ¾ access, allowing full access off of U.S. Highways 2 & 52 and right-on access only from certain side streets. Access is available for northbound traffic to go west on Highways 2 & 52 at 13th Street SE or 23rd Street SE.

Construction timelines were impacted for this project as a result of the summer flooding in Minot. Project officials continue to work towards completing the project this season.

6th Street closing today and traffic reduced to one-lane each direction starting Tuesday

Work continues on the U.S. Highways 2 & 52 project, with the paving of 6th Street SE scheduled for this week. The prime contractor, Keller Paving, is working at the intersection of U.S. Highways 2 & 52 and 6th Street and will close access from the highway south onto 6th Street today. The Highway department offices that are located there can be accessed from 6th Street south of their location. The road will be closed until paving is complete but is scheduled to reopen before the end of the week.

On Tuesday the northbound and southbound right lanes on Highway 83 will be closed to replace overhead sign structure towers. The work is expected to take a couple of days.

Additional work on the project includes traffic on the main highway being reduced to one-lane each direction this week. Keller Paving will be closing the median lanes first pushing eastbound and westbound traffic to the outer lanes. Speed limits will be reduced to 40 MPH throughout the construction zone. Work in the media lanes is expected to take approx. one month.

Part of the project is to convert the intersections along the highway to ¾ access, allowing full access off of U.S. Highways 2 & 52 and right-on access only from side streets.

55th Street Intersection Closure Planned for Tuesday

Work continues on Highway 2 and 55th Street east of Minot. The prime contractor, Gladen Construction, will switch traffic today to the median lanes allowing for work in the outside lanes of the project. Traffic is reduced to one lane each direction on Highway 2, and the speed limit is reduced.

Tuesday morning, access to 55th Street both north and south of Highway 2 will be closed until work in the intersection is completed. Paving and roadwork is scheduled for completion at the end of October. Signals and additional work at the intersection is scheduled for completion before the end of the year.

Work is ramping up again on the Highways 2&52 project, with the paving of 13th Street SE scheduled to take place early next week. The prime contractor, Keller Paving, is prepping 13th Street this week, with paving to begin Monday, August 29. The goal is to have 13th open to traffic by mid- week the week after the Labor Day holiday.

Other work occurring at this time includes concrete curb and gutter work on 6th Street, as well as street lights and electrical along 13th Street, 6th St. SE and 21st Ave. SE. Additionally, erosion control and seeding is taking place in all finished areas.

Project officials continue to work to make up time and complete as much work as possible this season.

Work is continuing along 13th Street S.E. The prime contractor, Keller Paving, will be prepping and paving driveway tie-ins and the bike path on 13th Street S.E. The main roadway north of the highways will remain open to traffic and access to businesses will be maintained.

13th Street S.E. (south of the highways) remains closed and will remain closed until the final surface is in place. Currently, contractors are prepping subgrade on the roadway. During this time NW Tire will maintain access off 13th Street and the frontage road.

Subgrade work is also being done on the 6th St. SE realignment and 21st Ave SE.

While project officials have continued to meet, work on plans to make up time and complete what work is possible, much of the equipment and materials needed to progress are currently limited due to flooding. Highway 2&52 Project Update

The past couple weeks have been tough in Minot. Due to the flood, many people, businesses and projects have been in a holding pattern as our community focuses on the flood fight, and this includes some elements of the U.S. Highway 2 & 52 Intersection Improvements Project.

While project officials have continued to meet, work on plans to make up time and complete what work is possible, much of the equipment and materials needed to progress are currently on the north side of town. As the flood situation evolves and access becomes easier, watch for increased activity on the project.

We know that you may have questions or concerns. Because the City Auditorium is serving as both a shelter and FEMA headquarters at this time we have suspended the weekly public meetings. But, please know that we remain accessible to you. We are glad to meet with you or take your calls and emails regarding the project anytime.

6th Street SE now open to traffic

Minot, N.D. – 6th St SE south of Highways 2 & 52 (in front of the Highway Patrol office) is now open to the public. Work on the water main and storm sewers has been completed.

The U.S. Highway 2 & 52 Intersection Improvements project includes four separate construction projects being completed over the course of two years. The prime contractor on the project is Keller Paving of Minot.

The purpose of the project is to provide for the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. Improvements include providing frontage and backage roads between the interchanges and access points, better roadway safety, and enhancing pedestrian/bicycle facilities and roadway lighting.

Road work to begin on Highway 2 & 52 project Tuesday

Minot, N.D. – The next phase of work on the Highway 2 & 52 Intersection Improvements projects is scheduled to begin Tuesday. The contractor will be closing 6th St SE south of Highways 2 & 52 (in front of the Highway Patrol office) to work on the water main and storm sewers.
The U.S. Highway 2 & 52 Intersection Improvements project includes four separate construction projects being completed over the course of two years. The prime contractor on the project is Keller Paving of Minot.

The purpose of the project is to provide for the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. Improvements include providing frontage and backage roads between the interchanges and access points, better roadway safety, and enhancing pedestrian/bicycle facilities and roadway lighting.

As the construction season gets underway, motorists are advised to plan ahead, note the lane changes and stay alert through the construction zone. The driving public is encouraged to use extra care during this project to ensure their safety and the safety of the crew.

Temporary Lane Closures to occur on U.S. Highways 2 & 52

Minot, N.D. – Temporary lane closures will occur on U.S. Highways 2 & 52 over the next several days. Crews will be working on the new traffic signals at the 13th Street S.E. and Highway 2 & 52 intersection. Traffic will remain open on the highway, with at least one lane for each direction at all times. Traffic speed on the highway is 40 MPH to allow for work in these areas.

The signals are scheduled to be fully operational by mid-December.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, note the lane changes and stay alert through the construction zone.

As a reminder, the driving public is encouraged to use extra care during this project to ensure their safety and the safety of the crew.

13th Street S.E. and Highway 2 & 52 intersection opens

Minot, N.D. – The intersection of 13th Street and Highway 2 & 52 is now open. All four lanes on Highway 2 & 52 will also be open to traffic for the holiday weekend. Traffic speed on the highway will remain at 40 MPH as final signal work at the intersection remains.

“The opening of 13th Street to north and south-bound traffic is a major milestone on the project and brings us one step closer to completing the planned phases for this year,” says Shane Karhoff, project engineer with Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson. Karhoff adds, “We are encouraging the public to stay alert through the intersection as the signals are not operational at this time. Safety for motorists and construction workers remains a top priority on the project.”

The four upright structures for the signals are in place and the arms are to be installed today and tomorrow, but the lights will not be fully operational until mid-December.

The public should note a couple of changes that are part of the project:

Traffic cannot cross at 20th Avenue north of U.S. Highways 2 & 52 and 13th Street (east and west-bound traffic). The frontage road in front of Kroll’s is now closed to through traffic for east-bound traffic and west-bound traffic off 20th Avenue S.E. will need to take a right to go north on 13th Street. West-bound traffic on 20th Avenue S.E. looking to go south should access 13th Street from 17th Street S.E. and 18th Avenue S.E.
South of U.S. Highways 2 & 52 traffic cannot access 13th Street S.E. from the frontage road near NW Tire.

While phase one of the three phases of the project is nearing completion, motorists are asked to continue to use extra care as work is finalized to ensure their safety and the safety of the crew.

13th Street SE south of U.S. Highways 2 & 52 opening today

Another milestone was achieved today, with the opening of 13th Street south of Highways 2 & 52. This section of roadway has been closed since the project began in May.

“Extensive work occurred on 13th Street both south and north of U.S. Highways 2 & 52 and it is great to see both opened to the traveling public,” says Shane Karhoff, project engineer with Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson. Karhoff adds “We appreciate the cooperation of the businesses directly impacted by the closures.”

Although 13th Street is open, the median lanes of the highway remain closed restricting north- and south-bound traffic across the highway. Work continues on the highway and traffic is reduced to one-lane each direction. The prime contractor, Keller Paving, continues work on the highway and the roadway will re-open yet this year. Traffic speed on the highway is 40 MPH.

Also occurring this week will be the application of temporary striping on the highway. Motorists should watch for changes in traffic lanes while this work occurs.

Crews hit a significant milestone on the U.S. Highways 2 & 52 project as 13th Street north of U.S. Highways 2 & 52 re-opened to traffic today. Crews also reopened 18th Ave. SE.

No additional closures are planned for either of these roadways. In the coming weeks, crews will be striping 13th St. and working on completing driveway access to businesses, but the roadway will remain open throughout this work.

Work continues on first three phases of U.S. Highways 2 & 52 project

The U.S. Highways 2 & 52 intersection improvements project began in June with phases 1-3 (of four phases) scheduled for completion by October 15, 2010.

The prime contractor, Keller Paving, continues work on the project with a focus on completing phases 1-3 yet this construction season. With the project past the contracted completion date, liquidated damages are being assessed to the prime contractor on a daily basis until the project is complete.

“Better weather has allowed the contractor to continue working. The goal is to complete the first three phases yet this construction season,” says Shane Karhoff, project engineer with Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson. “We appreciate the patience of the businesses directly impacted by the project. They truly have been great to work with.”

Safety and quality remain a top priority for this project. Kadrmas Lee & Jackson, the North Dakota Department of Transportation and the City of Minot continue to be very thorough in ascertaining that all specifications and codes are met.

Traffic remains open on the highway with one lane for each direction at all times. Traffic speed on the highway is 40 MPH.

A gas line was compromised today during underground work on 13th Street S.E. on the south side of U.S. Highways 2 & 52. The line will be restored within the next couple of hours, and the event is not expected to affect businesses or the driving public. “It was a mild disruption that does not compromise the safety of the traveling public or the workers, both of which continue to be our number one priority,” says Shane Karhoff, project engineer, Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson.

On U.S. Highways 2 & 52, lane changes may occur today. Crews continue to work in the turn lanes. Once turn lanes are completed, crews will begin working on the highway median lanes. Traffic will remain open on the highway, with one lane for each direction at all time. Traffic speed on the highway is 40 MPH to allow for work in these areas.

The eastbound turning lanes on U.S. Highways 2 & 52 will close Friday morning, and traffic will be reduced to one lane at this time. Westbound lanes also are down to one lane. Traffic speed on the highway is 40 MPH to allow for work in these areas.

The intersection of 13th Street S.E. and 20th Avenue S.E. (north of the highway) also will close tomorrow morning for the final asphalt paving in the intersection.

Two layers of asphalt are scheduled to be poured over the next few days. The intersection is scheduled to reopen Monday, October 25.

Also Friday, 18th Avenue S.E. (north of U.S. Highways 2 & 52) will reopen to traffic. This includes the intersection at 13th Street S.E.

USDA, Northwestern Mutual and Ward County Crop Insurance can be accessed off 18th Street S.E. just north of the businesses.

Krolls will continue to be accessed from 20th Avenue S.E. just south of their location.

18th Avenue S.E. (east of 13th Street S.E. and 17th Street S.E.) reopened this afternoon. The roadway is currently a temporary gravel road that will allow for traffic to access businesses and housing located in the area.

Tomorrow morning the 13th Street S.E. and 20th Avenue S.E. (north of the highways) intersection will be closed. At this time, access will not be available to and from U.S Highways 2 & 52 from 13th Street S.E. Traffic to and from U.S. Highways 2 & 52 will come from 20th Street S.E. (from the east) or 6th Street S.E. (from the west).

The closure is necessary for construction crews to complete the storm sewer installation and work on subgrade, fabric and gravel of the area. Crews will be working throughout the weekend and the intersection is expected to be open by Monday. This intersection is projected to have one more closure when crews go in to pave the roadway surface sometime in October.

Traffic speeds reduced along U.S. Highways 2 & 52 construction zone

As a reminder to the traveling public, traffic speeds have been reduced along the U.S. Highways 2 & 52 project.

Beginning near the 6th Street S.E. and U.S. Highways 2 & 52 intersection, traffic speeds have been reduced to 40 MPH.

The reduction in speeds is for the safety of the traveling public as the temporary detour routes are in place. The reduced speeds are being enforced with an $80 fine.

“Safety is always our number one priority for the project and we encourage the public to proceed with caution in the construction zone,” said Shane Karhoff of Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson, and the project engineer.

Current project updates include:
• Access to and off of the highway is currently closed and traffic off U.S Highways 2 & 52 will come from 20th Street S.E. or 6th Street S.E.

• Businesses along 13th Street S.E. north of the highway have blue signs to direct traffic to their entrance.

• Access to USDA, Northwestern Mutual and Ward County Crop Insurance is from a temporary roadway that will be parallel to 13th Street S.E. along the west side directly in front of the businesses.

• Access to Kroll’s is from 20th Avenue S.E. from the west side only off 13th Street S.E.

• Access to Westlie’s Truck Center is from the highway at 20th Street S.E. and from the north, traffic is being routed to 18th Avenue S.E. and 17th Street.

On 17th Street S.E. the paving of the new roadway surface is underway and is scheduled to be completed Monday. Once, complete 17th Street will reopen and crews will focus efforts on 13th Street.

Beginning early next week crews will begin major work on 13th Street S.E., north of Highways 2 & 52. The work will take approximately one month to complete.

The 20th Avenue S.E. and 13th Street S.E. intersection located north of Highways 2 & 52 will be closed during the first phase of these improvements. Closure will likely take place late Monday or Tuesday. During this time access to off the highway will be closed and traffic off U.S. Highways 2 & 52 will come from 20th Street S.E. or 6th Street S.E.

Blue business signs will clearly mark access points and both residential and business detour routes have been determined. The public, businesses and travelers are encouraged to register there to receive the most recent news and status reports on the project.

Beginning next week, traffic speeds will be reduced along the U.S. Highways 2 & 52 near the 6th Street and 2 & 52 intersection to 40 MPH while the alternate routes are in place.

Phase two of these improvements will result in the closure of the 18th Avenue S.E. and 13th Street S.E. intersection located north of Highways 2 & 52.

Just south of U.S. Highways 2 & 52, 13th Street sanitary sewer work is nearing completion. The roadway remains closed and will reopen this fall.

“This is the first new roadway surface work of the project and it shows that we’re making headway and progress,” said Troy Ripplinger, Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson engineer. Ripplinger also said that the main roadways of Highways 2 & 52 will remain open throughout the duration of the North Dakota State Fair which began today.

As work continues for the U.S. Highways 2 & 52 Intersection Improvements Project, some important points to note for the week include:

• On Thursday, July 15 at 7 a.m. 18th Avenue S.E., will close to allow construction crews to install a pond outfall pipe underneath the roadway. The roadway will be closed until Saturday.

• A detour will be in place on 17th Street S.E., during the duration of the 18th Avenue closure.

• 13th Street S.E. (south of U.S. Highways 2 & 52) remains closed for work on sanitary sewer. The roadway will reopen in September.

Traffic safety in construction zone emphasized for holiday weekend

Work continues on the U.S. Highways 2 & 52 Intersection Improvements Project and traffic safety is a strong emphasis the holiday weekend.

“Safety is a top priority for us and with the holiday weekend, traffic flow is likely to increase,” said Shane Karhoff, project engineer. “We always encourage the traveling public to be alert and to drive safely through the construction zone, but we’re asking for extra precaution during this time.”

Despite some recent wet weather, work will continue to forge ahead on the U.S. Highways 2 & 52 Intersection Improvements project.

Current roadway updates include:

On 18th Avenue S.E., initial prep work along the shoulder of the roadway will begin taking place. During this time, flaggers will be present and periodic short delays may occur. Drivers are asked to be aware of the crew working and to drive cautiously and safely.

The temporary gravel road on 17th Street S.E. (north of U.S. Highways 2 & 52) will remain closed as workers begin the stripping and excavation on the street. The road will be closed for approximately three weeks.

13th Street S.E. (south of U.S. Highways 2 & 52) will remain closed as work continues on the sanitary sewer and boring. The road will be closed until September

17th Street S.E. to close on Monday as part of U.S. Highway 2 & 52 construction project

The temporary gravel road on 17th Street S.E. (north of U.S. Highways 2 & 52) will close Monday, June 21, as part of the U.S. Highway 2 & 52 Intersection Improvements project. Drivers can expect this road to be closed for approximately one month.

In addition, construction crews will be working along the shoulders of 18th Avenue; however traffic will be maintained on this street. Drivers are asked to be aware of the crews working along the shoulders and to drive cautiously and safely.

As a reminder, 13th Street S.E. (south of U.S. Highways 2 & 52) will remain closed until September.

U.S. Highway 2 & 52 will remain open and access to businesses along the route will be maintained throughout the project according to Shane Karhoff, project manager with the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT).

The project is divided into four phases. Phases one, two and three will be completed by October 2010.

Reconstruction of 13th Street S.E., a new traffic signal at the intersection of 13th Street S.E. and U.S. 2 & 52, and an 8’ x 10’ reinforced concrete box culvert.
The 6th Street S.E. Realignment project will consist of realigning the portion of 6th Street S.E. –south of the U.S. Highway 2/52 Bypass in the form of a frontage or backage road going eastward to 13th Street S.E.
The 21st Avenue S.E. Extension project will consist of the construction of a new backage road (21st Avenue S.E.) – southeast of the 13th Street S.E./U.S. Highway 2 & 52 Bypass intersection. The new 21st Avenue S.E. will extend eastward between 13th Street S.E. and 17th Street S.E.
The 18th Avenue S.E. Backage Road project will consist of the reconstruction of 18th Avenue S.E. from 13th Street S.E. to 17th Street S.E. and the reconstruction of a new roadway that will tie 18th Avenue S.E. to 20th Avenue S.E.

Phase four of the project will be completed the summer of 2011.

The U.S. Highway 2 & 52 Intersection Improvements will be made on intersections between U.S. Highway 83 and U.S. Highway 52. These intersections include: 6th Street S.E., 13th Street S.E., 17th Street S.E., 20th Street S.E. and 23rd Street S.E.

The purpose of the project is to provide for the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. This includes improving system linkage by providing frontage and backage roads between the interchanges and access points, roadway safety while maintaining a reasonable level of service and access, and roadway deficiencies such as lack of pedestrian/bicycle facilities and inadequate roadway lighting.

“This is an extensive project and while we will be working hard to get things done, our top priorities are the public’s safety and ensuring access along the route. These things are an integral part of every stage of the work,” Karhoff says.

Keller Paving is the project's prime contractor and will be working with nine subcontractors to complete phases one, two and three by the end of October 2010.

Public meetings will be held every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the City Auditorium throughout the project.

The first public information meeting for the U.S. Highway 2 & 52 Intersection Improvements Project will be held Tuesday, June 15 at 10 a.m. at the City Auditorium, Room 203. This week, a business forum also will be held and any business owners located along the construction route are invited to attend. Weekly public meetings will continue throughout the construction season.

Representatives from the Minot Chamber of Commerce, City of Minot, North Dakota Department of Transportation, Kadrmas Lee & Jackson, and Keller Paving will provide information on construction plans and timelines and will be available to answer questions. U.S. Highway 2/52 Intersection Improvements Project Starts Wednesday

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) announced construction of the U.S. Highway 2/52 Intersection Improvements Project will begin Wednesday with the closing of 13th Street S.E., just south of U.S. Highway 2/52. The roadway will be closed until September.

Access to Northwest Tire and all other businesses will be available for the duration of the road closure. Residents living on 13th Street S.E. will have access to their homes via alternate routes such as 31st Avenue S.E..

The U.S. Highway 2/52 Intersection Improvements project includes four separate construction projects that will be completed over the course of two years. The prime contractor on the project is Keller Paving of Minot.

According to Shane Karhoff - Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson (KLJ), project engineer, the purpose of the project is to provide for the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. Construction will include improving the system linkage by providing frontage and backage roads between interchanges and access points, roadway safety, and the improvement of current roadway deficiencies such as lack of pedestrian/bicycle facilities and inadequate roadway lighting.

Public service announcements, press releases and announcements will be disseminated regularly to the media and public throughout the project.

A project website that will include updates, maps and announcements is currently in development. A Twitter account and Facebook fan page have also been established as additional communication channels and will serve as the primary information source until the full project website launches later this month. The project’s social media tools can be found at www.minotroads.com.

Weekly public meetings will begin June 15 to convey information and ensure construction progress and plans are communicated to residents, business owners and travelers. The meetings will be held at 10 a.m. every Tuesday throughout the duration of the project at the City Auditorium.
